The Rain

Isaiah 55:8-138 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
10 “The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
11 It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
12 You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
13 Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.
Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up.
These events will bring great honor to the Lord’s name;
they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

We read these verses in church today and I felt compelled to share them. Living on this world at times does not make sense. We don’t know what God is doing.

He allows rain and snow to come into our life and, seemingly, ruin everything. Our lives become effectively delayed while the snow melts and the flooding subsides. Sometimes, the effects are greater than a delay and we lose power or become damaged.

I love this verse though because it shows that this same rain and snow is used to grow the most beautiful things in us. The rain effectively wipes away the unsightly things in outlives and gives life to the beautiful things God has for us.

Through the rain, or trial, God will accomplish exactly what He wants of you.

Shadow Sides

We live in a fallen world where the death that comes with sin has perverted everything around us. I think a part of this perversion takes our greatest God-given gift and mutates it into one of our deepest, if not our worst, struggle.

I find that my mind is both my greatest strength and my greatest weakness. With my mind I have the ability to analyze and have a deep understanding of people. With my mind I am able to write music, poetry, and books. God has blessed me with a mind that understands concepts and how things connect.

None of these gifts come without a price, though. My mind has also taken me to some of the darkest places I have ever been. My mind has held me captive with hopelessness. My mind has twisted me into someone I’m not. My mind has been lost to the addiction that comes with depression.

The Bible states that Satan only wishes to steal and kill and destroy. I don’t think we realize that our talents are anything but off-limits when it comes to Satan’s hatred. He aims to mangle us and destroy everything we are because we are made in the image of God.

This is why Satan targets our greatest gifts or talents. God has implanted each and every one of us with a unique and intentional gift. Some of us have a beautiful heart. Some of us have unparalleled passion. Some of us have the ability to entertain and make others laugh.

What better revenge than to take these gifts and twist them into a horrific ailment?

A beautiful heart becomes anxiety. An unparalleled passion becomes a disconnection from others. The gift of entertainment transforms into a fear of man.

In my case, a creative mind transformed into crippling depression.

I want to remind you that your gifts were not designed for malfunction. Your gifts were not designed with the purpose that their shadow sides would win out in the end.

God has given you special gifts so that they will be used to serve others and fulfill the very special mission He has for you. We see in Jeremiah 1:5 that God knows not only who we are but what role He has for us before we even exist.

The gifts of God are your destiny, not their shadow sides that comes from the perversion of Sin and Satan.

The Intellectually Superior Atheist

A favorite past time of mine is watching Atheist videos on youtube. I love listening to their reasons for denying the existence of my God and then forming a counter argument to fight against their beliefs.

In the comments, these people dissolve into a mess of self pride as they endorse their clear, true entirely undogmatic view of the world. They scoff at how ignorant, uneducated Christians can deny the settled science of evolution while they point out that God is cruel because He endorsed slavery in Exodus 21.

Antagonistic atheists try and prove that God is cruel as a way to dissuade belief. They’ll point to verses like the aforementioned Exodus 21 or stories of the Israelites wiping out entire people groups. In addition to this, they will also peg Christians as anti-science due to their limited knowledge of evolution.

I see a deep hypocrisy within these examples. Atheists tend to have a very limited knowledge of the Bible while Christians tend to have a very limited knowledge of evolution.

I find it ironic that antagonistic atheists do not realize that they are guilty of what they accuse Christians of. Atheists pull verses out of context as a way to construct a lie about the nature of God and the nature of the Bible. They blindly attack something they know nothing about.

I find Christians who are guilty of this to be just as at fault. By blindly attacking evolution we run the risk of polarizing someone to God’s truth by presenting ourselves as ignorant.

The assumption that all atheists are smarter than all creationists is undeniably false. Both sides are prone to blindly attacking something they have no true understanding of. As a young Christian, I obviously regard Creationism as truth. This doesn’t keep me from reading up on evolution or atheism in order to avoid blindly attacking.

I would encourage those who disagree with me to do the same. Actually read the Bible and apply basic Hermeneutics.

Feminism is Dead: The Wage Gap isn’t Real.

fewer_carrots“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting its pants on.” I have yet to find a phrase that better portrays modern day feminism. The reasons why I simply must consider myself a feminist are shoved down my throat everywhere from parody accounts on twitter to New York Times articles. It is such a vogue movement to be apart of it seems that no one is taking the time to see that the current feminism we have in the west is nothing more than lies traveling at the speed of light.

I probably would of been a feminist a few decades ago, when it was actually relevant in our culture. But, in the present day, I simply prefer not to entangle myself in the trap of victimhood mentality. Feminism in the west is dead. Please, let it rest in peace.

There are so many lies that are repeated so often in our culture so multiple blog posts will be created to comprehensively show how very dead feminism is.

We’ll start with the most prevalent, yet most debunked myth of them all- the wage gap. I’ll watch these supposedly inspirational videos by Kristen Wigg or Buzzfeed and find myself groaning every time this silly and easily rebutted point is brought up.

The claim that women make around 79 cents for the same amount for the same amount of work is such a blatantly divisive and false claim. This claim might account for the numbers but not the choices behind them.

For one, men on average literally work more hours than women. It’s common sense that working more hours will generate more money. When working as a waitress over the summer, I never felt as though there was any foul play when my colleagues who worked an eight hour shift earned more than I would in my four hour one. Putting in more time and effort into work generates more money.

Feminists like to point out that this is a result of gender roles and the fact that women are expected to take care of children, unlike their male counterparts. While there is certainly little debate that women take the primary role of caregiver, feminists call foul. This role of women is not as result of an oppressive patriarchy but basic science. Women are fundamentally different than men on both a psychological and emotional level. The reason that women generally care for children is not a result of weakness- but because they are stronger in the area caregiving. Your average man is stronger when it comes to enforcing rules and laying down the law but your average women is stronger when comes to the full time job of fulfilling a child’s emotional needs.

Seriously- who’s side of the bed did you shake when you threw up as a kid? Mom’s.

Even if you disagree with my view of gender roles, motherhood’s effect on the wage gap is rather small. The biggest contribution is the careers women go into. 40% of math majors are women but the majority of these women end up going into teaching This is because passion trumps practicality. Women aren’t choosing to become teachers or social workers because they want to make big bucks- they choose these jobs because they care.

So, all in all, women aren’t paid less due to evil capitalistic men. Women, as a general population, face an earnings gap due to choices made by the majority of the gender. You can argue the merit behind these choices but you can’t argue that the wage gap is a myth.

Women make different career choices than men and perhaps this is why feminists continually hang the wage gap theory over everybody’s head. Because it shows that women are fundamentally different from men.

Hashtagged Hoaxes

One of my favorite quotes is “A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth is still putting on its shoes.” by Mark Twain. I think this perfectly sums up our current age of technology with frightening accuracy, considering Twain died almost 7 decades before the internet was invented.

In the Western world, we live in a society that is entirely dominated by viral content and television screens. We find new products to buy, people to befriend, and ideas to believe all through our various illuminated screens. Information is instantaneously accessible.

Through tools such as Facebook’s trending topics and Twitter’s hashtags, we can tap into popular belief systems and see what topics people from all over the world find important.
While the age of information can help curb curiosity and draw immediate attention to current events, the internet is renowned for spreading false information at rates never experienced before.

A quick google search for “biggest internet hoaxes” will result in dozens of hits showing people believing stories, only to later find out that they have been completely duped. This is a regular occurrence- so why does it surprise when we realize that our political, sociological, and philosophical beliefs can be based on lies, as well?

We accept lies in advertisements. We accept lies when it comes to products and what we’ll be receiving. Not only do we accept the lies of our politicians, we have been conditioned to expect it.

We, as Christians, accept lies about tolerance and other religions.

I see this trend of tolerating and even loving lies as something very concerning in our culture.  Better yet, I see this trend as something that needs to be fought against.

That is the point of this blog. It will be anything but perfect. I’m sure that at some point I will accidentally put forth a lie and call it the truth and I hope that my readers will hold me accountable of this. I might be critical of a belief you hold dear. I might be critical of a belief hold dear.

Regardless, I hope truth inspires you as much as it does me.
